I have been traveling through the book of Jeremiah. In portions there are false prophets speaking deceptive words of peace. Healing that is surface and superficial and a deceptive stream of water that is unreliable. As I considered the "deceptive stream" I asked myself, "what does that look like?"
Well, it looks like pure water but it’s not! So I thought about churches today where the Word is read but the preaching adds or subtracts thus impacting nutrientsm, circumventing the true source of supply and redirecting into muddy places filled with disease and death. And worse, healing that is superficial and temporal and creating a deeper infection under the surface that further hardens the heart and mind!
I considered this as I read Chapter 17:8: "Those who trust in the Lord will be like a tree planted by the water, extending its roots to the stream; and when heat comes, leaves stay green and unaffected by drought." There is personal action - "extending." I can’t just go listen to messages or studies by others and think that there is no requirement for me to "extend my roots." I must drink the Word. I must recognize and discern the stream and know where to extend. It must be daily. Leaves will stay green for awhile without water but as time and life happens they will either die from no supply or die from a contaminated supply.
Deception seems to mark much of life today inside and outside the so-called church. Smooth words of safety in sin choking the very structure of both the individual and corporate. In closing, I have a little granddaughter who has magnificent taste buds. If her mom tries to add anything to water or juice - even supposedly tasteless- she throws it down and says this is not my juice or my water! Oh that I would be that discerning to throw down and say, "This is not the Word of God. This is not my Jesus! This is not pure!"
